To learn whether your child may need a tooth extraction, we invite you to contact our practice today.
Primary teeth, or baby teeth, are supposed to fall out on their own, but that is only when the permanent tooth is ready to come up and replace it. However, when certain situations arise, your child may need to have a tooth extracted in order to preserve their overall oral health. Some situations where an extraction may be necessary include:
- To address severe tooth decay
- To prevent or correct malocclusion (bad bites)
- To treat trauma or injury
- To remove a baby tooth that did not fall out when it needed to on its own
Your child’s tooth extraction procedure will depend on whether or not the tooth is visible. If is it, we can simply remove the tooth by numbing the area and gently extracting the tooth. If the tooth is impacted or still underneath the gum surface, we may need to remove a portion of the gum tissue that surrounds the impacted tooth. Our pediatric dentists will numb the treatment area before beginning the procedure.
After a tooth extraction, it is very important that you help your child care for their mouth so that they can avoid infection and have a smooth recovery. Their mouth will bleed after their procedure, but we will place a gauze over the treatment area. If the gauze gets full, replace it until the bleeding stops. You can give your child over-the-counter pain medication to help with any discomfort. Placing an ice pack over the treatment area for about 20 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling. Be sure to only give your child soft foods for the first 24 hours after their treatment. Do not let your child drink from a straw or spit. When brushing their teeth, make sure your child avoids the treatment area until it heals.
Our team will ensure that your child’s procedure goes smoothly, and we are always here to help if you have any questions about the procedure or recovery process. Your child’s comfort and safety are our top priorities! For more information about baby tooth extractions, please feel free to call 972-535-8169 or visit us today!
